BBC NEWS | Education | Delay formal lessons 'to age six'

The BBC reporting the Cambridge Primary Review highlights the recommendation that children delay the start of formal schooling until the age of six. In 1916 this was proposed by the Chief Medical Officer at the Board of Health and later campaigned for by the Nursery School Association. It was rejected constantly by governments mainly on the grounds of the cost of providing nursery schools. With far more women now participating in the paid labour market the cost would be relatively higher but government spending is always subject to the way it arranges its priorities.
