Home-Schooling Grows in New York City - NYTimes.com

In fact this is more about home pre-schooling, which is to say no pre-schooling at all. It's striking that what's being described here was for generations the middle-class default, i.e. a mother educating and "rearing" a child at home and in the community. And now it's being portrayed as a progressive - if not entirely radical - departure? What is it that makes this radical? Middle-class kids with their mothers at the playground and museums... nothing new there. And where are all the anti-schooling dads in this story? Not at the playground on a weekday afternoon, apparently. Am I the only one who has deja-vu with this? Plus ça change...
