Educational Quality in First Grade. The Elementary School Journal 109, no 4

Researchers analyzed 800+ U.S. first grade (year one) classrooms to assess quality. The study developed a typology of first grades correlating teacher, child and school characteristics. This typology would seem to be helpful for opening scholarly discussion on the (heretofore neglected) subject. The study's findings, though sobering, are not completely unexpected: most first-grades were not found to be high in quality.
