A Times take on the survey results mentioned by Kevin Brehony earlier today (below)...

New survey findings leave Government and experts wondering whether programmes such as Sure Start are providing the developmental boost they promised to give young children. Not only do recent results suggest that 40% of five-year-olds can't write their own names or sound out simple words, many are struggling in the areas of personal, social, and emotional development, too. Social class differences in children's development continue to loom large.
